Fashion Revolution x Mend in Public Day | Online darning workshop | Saturday 26th April | 12pm - 2pm

As part of Fashion Revolution Week and Mend in Public Day, why not try your hand at visible mending to repair the clothes you love. Using traditional darning techniques with a creative twist, you can learn how to mend those pesky moth holes and general areas of wear and tear so that your favourite clothes can be kept in your wardrobe and out of landfill. 

Visible mending allows us all to squash those perfectionist fears by embracing bold and creative darns that celebrate all of our hand worked and wonky stitches. Mended is better than perfect and choosing to repair the clothes we love instead of buying new also shows the fashion industry that we care about the stories of our clothing from the textile farmers growing the cotton through to the garment workers who made the clothes. Visible mending can also turn your clothing into a wearable scrapbook, capturing the life you are living in them and making every garment uniquely yours.

This 2 hour live workshop will show you how to get started with darning a plain weave patch - a great technique for visibly mending your clothes in a colourful and creative way. Learn the basics of the warp and weft, best threads and yarns for different garments and the tools and tricks you need to get started. I will be mending a garment during this workshop with a woven darn and you can join me to either watch the process or bring your own garment and we can mend along together. Please note that I am based in the UK so times listed are shown in UK GMT time.

Suitable for beginners and sewing enthusiasts alike, we can also discuss the best ways to go about darning particular clothes using different techniques, yarns and tools.

For the workshop you will need:

• a holey sock / jumper / item of clothing (a small hole is best to start with)
  ...or a piece of fabric to practice on if you'd prefer!
• a darning needle
• thread of a similar thickness to your clothing (specific darning wools are easily available but you can also use embroidery thread or sashiko thread depending on the fibre content of your item)
• scissors
• darning mushroom or darning disc (or something similar eg. a jam jar lid, pebble, orange, lightbulb).
